ABOUT ME

I write all the things. My first novel, The Movement of Stars, was published by Riverhead Books, and my articles, essays and short stories have appeared in One Story, The Common, Redbook, Real Simple, Salon, Guernica, Lapham's Quarterly, The Washington Post, Oprah Daily, Medium, Electric Literature, and in anthologies Before and After: Stories from New York, Lost & Found, and Labor Day. My story, Future Perfect, was featured on the Moth Radio Hour after I told it live onstage. I do not like listening to myself.

I've been awarded fellowships in fiction by the Edward Albee Foundation, Jentel, the Millay Colony, Fundacion Valparaiso, the Constance Saltonstall Foundation, the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA, and the New York Foundation for the Arts, and a George Foster Peabody Award for writing MTV’s The Social History of HIV. I have written and produced many other projects about art, culture, health and society for PBS, NYFA, MTV, and other organizations.

When I'm not writing articles, essays or books, I help businesses tell their stories

I live in New York with my family.
